Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire where his father was a doctor.

He was christened at St Chad's and started his education at a local Unitarian day-school in 1817. He later transferred to Shrewsbury School where he was a boarder.

A statue to the town's most famous son was erected in 1897 outside his old school building, which had become Shrewsbury Museum and Library. It is now occupied by Shrewsbury Library.
